With John Cooke dressed suitably as Mr Bligh for his part as referee, the team had pre match orders to spread the ball wide. For most of the first half the orders were obeyed leading to a series of well worked tries, before a small mutiny in the second half (not led by Fletcher!) with the forwards keeping the ball to good effect.
First Allen benefited from good passing from a line out to open the scoring with Fletcher converting. Long Buckby came back quickly as South switched off from the restart – 7:5. Higgs then added for South followed by try for Woods following an excellent offload from Duggan – 19:5. Allen was too hot to handle and completed his hatrick either side of Duggan’s try following Huczmann’s offload – 40:5 at half time.
Changes were made at half time allowing Long Buckby to come back into the game with a deserved forward’s try and conversion – 40:12. Douglas then showed his strength to muscle his way through the defence line and offload to Higgs. With Long Buckby adding another, Douglas again showed his strength for a deserved try and closes the game at 54:19.
A good disciplined performance with a mixture of exciting flowing backs movement and strong forwards play.
A word of advice for John – you need to spend more than £2 to get a decent pair of shorts!
