Storming South

Match reports:

What a beautiful day this turned out to be. The BBC forecasted a tsunami and as we drove into the ground, the indications were that it would be but once the last of our 17 strong half-term squad turned up, the rain stopped and the sun came out to stay.

It seems that South also turned up,because we had a feast of rugby in store for us, playing Pinley and our hosts, Newbold, in a 3-way challenge.

Newbold played Pinley first and it was a tough, close fought game, that Pinley took in the second half to win 10-5.

South v Pinley:
---------------------------------
South kicked off down the gentle slope in the first half.

South started brightly.
3 mins in, Callum spotted there was no fullback and placed a cheeky chip behind the opposition, making te most of the slope. Reece collected and over for first try 20m to the right.of the posts. Conversion missed.
5-0 to South.

KO collected by South's forwards and after a few phases, George scored in right hand corner and Callum kicked a beaut from touch line.
12-0 to South.

KO gathered and after some decent forwards work in the centre of the park, a great run from Will down the middle. Recycled and Luke storm through the middle to score under posts. Converted.
19-0 to South.

2nd Half:

KO by Pinley - South now playing uphill.
South carried the ball straight back at Pinley into their 22m. Ball turned over but some excellent forwards work resulted in the ball being turned over by Cam on their 5m line. South win clean ball, out to the backs who try a move, but knocked on in the scissors. Scrum to Pinley still on their 5m line. Pinley won and kicked to clear, but straight to a well position Sam at fullback, who took the ball back at Pinley. Sam taken down 10m out but the forwards recycled and Morgan crashed through for a try between the posts. Converted by Callum.
26-0

KO taken by Pinley. Taken by Luke who stormed up the left wing with fire in his eyes, finally tackled o their 22m but managed a sweet offload to Alex, who was tackled in to touch. Lineout to Pinley but not straight. Scrum 10m to South. George called a back row move which worked well and he headed for the posts, tackled 5m out but managed to offload to Reece who droped over to score a try under posts. Converted by Callum.
33-0

Pinley KO downhill and immediately put pressure on 5m out under our posts. Repeated penalties against South but finally after a crunching tackle from Morgan on their giant number 8, our tackling and rucking finally won the ball.

Good passing down the line and we move up to their 22m. Pen to south but kicked too long and it went dead. 22m kick to Pinley. Line out Pinley. Last play and South tackling wins turnover and the ball was kicked to touch to end the game.

South victory, 33-0.

South v Newbold
---------------------------------
After a 5min breather, it was back out to face a rested Newbold side, keen to redress the balance with some decent players.

KO to South downhill.
Lineout to Newbold half way. They win the ball cleanly but a big tackle by a marauding Luke on their scrum half. They recycled and spin the ball out but decide to kick over the top but straight in to the grateful arms of our big center, Will who took the ball straight back at them; unfortunately, a missed pass stopped the move. Scrum to Newbold on half way.

Newbold secured the ball but once again, kicked it over the top in to the waiting arms of Sam, who fed the ball to Charlie but forced out on their 22m.
Lineout Newbold. Turnover to South, ball spun out to Callum now on the right wing. Beautiful show of the ball in both hands, step off his left foot and past the fullback, 70 yds to score in righthand corner.
Difficult conversion missed.
5-0 to South.

2nd Half:

Newbold KO downhill, who immediately turn over the ball. Pressure down the middle from Newbold and ill discipline from South gift a Penalty to Newbold on our 10m line.

Kick to left touch. Newbold win their lineout and drive through down the left touchline to score a deserved try in the left corner.
Conversion missed.
5-5

KO South but did not make the 10m. So Newbold scrum on halfway.
Ball rolls out the other side and Charlie is first to react with a neat pick up. Poor passing from South on halfway gifted Newbold the ball, allowing them to score against the run of play just to the right of our posts.
A gust of wind and the South quick rections meant the kick was charged down.
5-10

South restart but secured the ball immediately and after a few phases in the Newbold 22m, the ball was slung out to the backs and Alex with a smart offload to Charlie allowing him to score under the posts.
Callum converted.
12-10 to South.

South acting as if the game was won but the second half was so entertaining, the ref decided to add another 10mins!
Newbold restarted and caught South resting on their laurels. Newbold win turnover ball on our 22m to score a try in the left corner.
Conversion missed.
12-15

South refocus and restart.
Powerful forwards play wins the ball on their 10m, recycled, out to Luke who barrelled through the surprised Newbold defence to score under posts.
Callum converted.
19-15

Newbold restart but South, with some determined play win the ball and take play back up the pitch to their 10m line where the ball is knocked on.
Game over!
