South V Newbold

Match report South v Newbold RFC 15/1/17

This was the second meeting of South and Newbold and it was always going to be a close match, after South narrowly beat Newbold at their ground earlier in the season.

South again started strongly, bursting out of the blocks, putting good pressure on the Newbold forwards, with Jack taking and driving hard at the Newbold pack, taking play deep into their 22".

From the breakdown the ball was spun out the South backs, where Luke made a good trademark drive, set a ruck ball and Big Josh W took the ball on a thumping charge forward.

Newbold rallied, winning some lovely ball at the breakdown, their big No8 causing issues around the tackle at the breakdown. Play went down the left wing but the South defence locked it out, with Jono and Josh B making some lovely tackles to halt the Newbold attacks.

South continued to apply pressure with Mitch at scrum-half being very busy, slotting a lovely chip kick through to turn Newbold on their heels. South were smashing into the Newbold pack and took play right to their try line but were just held. South were eventually awarded a five metre scrum but were penalised for pushing to far, just when a try was beckoning.

Newbold defended well though and took play fiercely back at us, forcing us to defend a lineout in our 22". Newbold built on this and managed to steal a score in the bottom corner

Conversion missed

0-5 to Newbold at the end of the first half.

The second half started brightly with everything to play for. Cam made a great break, showing the big lad has tons of speed. This was stopped and from the ensuing scrum some beautiful interpassing from Morgan, Jono and Jack, took play deep into the Newbold 22".

Newbold soaked up the pressure and took back at us, working the ball well through their backs, our concentration slipped and they sprinted through for another try under the post this time.

They scored the conversion.

0-12 to Newbold.

South weren't done though and again started battering on the Newbolds door. The South back row causing them lots of problems at the breakdown and South worked tirelessly to take the ball towards the try where eventually the ball was passed to George who showed great strength to drive over for a well earned try.

This proved to be the last score of what had been a very entertaining contest !

Well done lads, you played some lovely rugby against a well organised and strong tackling team. Your commitment and guts were obvious and you continued working until the final whistle, we can't ask anymore ! Well done lads.

Man of the match today was Jack Burge who had a stormer. A massive tackler and always a menace around the breakdown. Well done Jack.
