29-10-17 - Vs Melbourne (A)

Sunday, 29th October, saw the boys travel to South Derbyshire for a match against Melbourne Rugby Club. With Riley still out with a broken finger and Archie Towers under the weather 13 players turned up, enough for a team but no subs.

Things started off well and after 8 minutes South were holding their own until a slight gap appeared in the South line and Melbourne ran in for the first try of the game. The next two tries came in quick succession for Melbourne with South grouping together and leaving huge gaps which the wingers just couldn’t close. A fumble by Melbourne saw Corban take advantage. Handing off players left and right he ran from the half way line scoring South’s first try of the game. Melbourne gained another two tries before the break ending with a score of 5 – 1 to the home team.

After the internal Melbourne came straight at South and scored 2 tries in quick succession. This seemed to galvanise South and in the next scrum the ball was won, passed down the line and ended up in the competent hands of Joe who ran it in for South’s second try. Melbourne responded by scoring 3 tries in the next 5 minutes. After this it was South’s turn to take the upper hand. The forwards went into overdrive winning the scrums and the backs gaining space and keeping the ball moving. The ball made its way to Archie P who went on a mission and took the ball from the 22 metre line to within spitting distance of the goal line before he was taken down. Luckily with the rest of the squad on his heels, a few scrappy passes saw Curtis get the ball down for a try. In the 16th minute a superb run from Cole got the ball deep inside the Melbourne half, a swift pass to Corban and South collected their fourth try of the game. In the dying embers of the game Joe once again found himself in possession of the ball and over the line for South’s fifth and final try. Final score, Melbourne 11, South 5.
