08-10-17 - Vs Oadby Wyggs (H)

The first match of the 2017/18 season: South Leicester’s U13's have 3 new players this year. They are Archie Parkinson, Ethan O'Connell and Zac Clark-Monks. With all three looking promising in training expectations for the team are high for the coming season. A recovering broken arm and a newly broken finger have stopped Josh Lowry and Riley Hyndman, respectively, playing in this game. We all wish them both a speedy recovery.

With only 12 men on the pitch we had to poach one from Oadby. Luckily this wasn't a problem due to Oadby bringing enough players to put out 2 teams and still having enough players for subs.
South kicked off and straight away Oadby caught South on the back foot and ran for a try. South put in a few good runs, won a few scrums but didn’t seem to have the support when it came to the rucks. Corban and Joe made some excellent defensive runs, on more than one occasion stopping Oadby from scoring. Unfortunately Oadby dominated the first half ending with a score of 9 – 0 to the visitors.

After a talking to from the Gaz and Jono, South lined up for the second half. Determination set in and South looked like a different team. The ball was fought for, the scrums were tight and the forwards dived in to support the rucks and mauls. Some excellent tackles from Tai put Cole in his element to run with the ball. Archie and Curtis commanded the team so that the second half would have been an equal battle if it wasn’t for Oadby changing the entire team. New legs meant the visitors scored another 5 with a final score of 14 – 0. A horrendous score line for their first match but the lads can be proud of their resolve.
