Match Report - South vs. Syston (u13's) - 11th Jan 2015

Beautiful sunny day but gusty breeze across.
Soc Ref. Mr. Chadburn presiding.

Summary:
We knew Syston had a few outstanding players, a big squad and are well drilled... this was never going to be easy!
South played a strong game in the first half, putting good pressure on all Syston possession, winning some decent ball and scrummaging well, playing a vast majority of the game in the Syston half! So the half time score of 0 - 14 was thanks primarily to their freaky full-back.
2nd half was somewhat of a collapse by South but again, a majority of their territory and points thanks to the same players. One thing's for certain, the final score of 0 - 46 did not do justice to the effort and determination shown by the lads... Remember, what doesn't kill you makes you stronger! So let's learn our lessons well and come back stronger and ready the next time!

Report:
1st Half:
South starting brightly with a good kick-off to the 10m line from Alex, knocked on by Syston.
South win ball and pass along the line to the Charlie on the wing but a poor pass did not go to hand and Syston capitalised, immediately passing to their full-back who made decent territory, before finally being tackled by Jack on South 22 but Pen to Syston.
Syston pass straight out to wing, loop and score 20m left of posts... 0 - 5
Excellent conversion... 0 - 7

Good long kick-off by Alex to Syston full-back, kick to touch on Syston 22.
South line-out lost but Morgan momentarily won turn-over ball but Syston win it back and kick touch.
Line-out Syston 10m line to South. Syston win ball illegally, penalty South quickly taken by South who progress to Syston 22 but knocked on, scrum Syston.
Syston win ball and attempt clearing kick but due to great pressure from the South back row, it's straight up instead, back to their own players and under further excellent pressure from South, Syston knock on; scrum to South on Syston 22.
Syston win 2 scrums against the head, on half way, out to their well drilled backs and along to guess who... the Syston full-back, finally in South's half, mowed down a few South attempts to tackle with fierce hand-offs and scored under the posts... 0 -12
Conversion good... 0 - 14

Another good restart by Alex but Syston keen to run everything now. However, South had different ideas and pressurise the Syston line with some crunching tackles, forcing a knock on from Syston; scrum to South on the Syston 22.
South win ball, Morgan, Mitch and Jack, attacking Syston's defence, creaking under the onslaught, up to Syston 5m line.
South recycle and go for the line, going over but held up; South scrum 5m.
South win ball, Reece takes blind side and passes to Charlie but knocked on in the corner; Syston scrum 5m.

Half time score: South 0 - Syston 14

2nd Half:
Mitch, Myles, Charlie off; Max, Lewis + 1 other on.

Syston restart and their tails are clearly up and get the ball to their danger man, the full-back, who ran around our whole team to score in the corner... 0 - 19
Conversion missed.

Continued pressure from Syston at the restart, starting to kick over the South defence, putting pressure on our full-back, Syston win turn-over ball On South 10m line, but knock it on under pressure from the South backs, Excellent pick-up by Jack very nearly breaking through Syston's last line of defence, finally tackled on Syston 22 but isolated and penalised for holding on.
Penalty quickly taken by Syston, passed quickly down the line, in to South's half, tackled and recycle to score in the left hand corner... 0 - 24
No conversion.

Syston tails are up now and South in a little dis-array, heads down, resulting in four further tries in fairly quick succession that we shall no dwell on, including 2 from their full-back, with just one converted... 0 - 41

Jonathon injured in a crunching tackle goes off, Myles back on. Sam replaced by Charlie at full-back, in an attempt to stem the flow of tries from the full-back in particular. After Charlie threw himself in his path and Jack felled him on the touch line, the full-back is taken off; South line-out on our 22.
Syston win the ball and score one further try... 0 - 46
No conversion (I think).
