South made a mockery of the conditions playing their best rugby of the season by far.

A grey cold wet Sunday morning at one of the highest grounds in the county set the scene for the teams first match this calendar year.

A good turnout meant we had subs and were able to volunteer a player to boost Jimmies numbers who fielded a mixed age team with some big lads in the forward line.

The tempo of South’s morning was set early on by a crunching tackle by Nile and two fine bursts of pace from Sam who was only halted after some crunching tackles from Jimmies. Matters were finely balanced and Jimmies pressed hard. A strong defensive maul led to a breakaway from Mitch running the whole length of the pitch, before being tackled three meters from the line. South were awarded from this break as some good passing led to a try for Will leading from the front and going over from a rolling maul to put South one up.

This certainly buoyed the boys and the teams were evenly matched despite the physical advantage of the blue stripes. South tackles were as good as they have been all season and the scrum more than held its own. Playing up the slope the boys held firm until a strong run from a Jimmies wing evened up the score. Half time 5-5

A quick drink, encouraging words from the coaches and some furious hand warming saw South back on the pitch and facing downhill. Direct from the first tap Alex ran through the whole Jimmies defence to score a fine solo try. South were now in a confident mood and Reece added to the score with an opportunist scrum half try, spotting a gap and going over direct from a 5 meter scrum. Jimmies then responded with a try back to make the score 15-10. It was our day though as typified by two lung bursting runs from Max and George. Max’s run was probably the highlight of the day as he seemed to carry half of the Jimmies team on his back for a good ten meters, and from the resulting breakdown Sam went over for a well deserved try. To wrap the day up Alex scored two further tries, as Jimmies spirits faded with his final try being the last play of the game. Final score 10-30.

Due to the weather and a rather dispirited Jimmies side we called it a day early.

Every South player stood tall today and those on the touchline were just as much a part of the team as the ones on the pitch; you should all be very proud of your victory. Lets build on this success as we face a sterner test next week versus LFE.

Thanks also to the parents who yet again turned out in numbers, supporting the green and white brilliantly and Alex Adams for taking the whistle.
