Too strong for the Covents.

Match report

South leicester RFC v Old Coventrians RFC 1/11/15

Again the weather was fantastic for our first home game of the season against an unknown Old Covents side. Old Covents needed some help from our players and Charlie, Max and Myles turned out for the opposition. Well done lads ! Great rugby spirit !! From the off South started strongly and it was clear that South we're going g to be the stronger side by a considerable margin. Pressure from a South scrum led to Reece popping over for the first score.

5-0 South. Conversion missed.

The came something very special, Joe caught the ball from a long restart and in the mode of Julian Savea, World Cup winning all black, went rampaging through a raft of tacklers to romp in for the try of season so far !

10-0. Conversion missed.

South were just piling on the pressure and worked their way back towards the Old Covents 22" where Cam playing at No8 picked up from the base charged through the defence to score a nice try.

15-0. Conversion missed.

South were on fire now and Reece again was proving to be a real pain for Old Covents, scoring another well worked try from some slick handling.

20-0. Conversion missed.

The Tide of South attacks was unstoppable and Mitch spotted a nice gap from a ruck and darted over to score his first of two tries !

25-0. Conversion missed.

From the restart the forward recycled he ball well and fed Reece who burst up the wing supported brilliantly by George, Reece drew the covering winger and fed George who showed great speed to score with a dive under the posts.

30-0. Alex popped the kick over
32-0 South.

South were hungry for tries now and it wasn't long before Jack got in on the act by flying down the left wing and scoring under the posts. Alex neatly kicked the conversion.

39-0 to South.

Credit to Old Covents though they worked the ball towards our line from the restart and forced two penalties. They attacked hard and managed to score and hard earned converted try just before half time.

Half time 39-7 to South

It was decided at half time to try and even things up for Old Covents. Reece, Callum, Morgan and Will swapped sides and pulled on an Old Covents Jersey. This did make a difference to their team and they started to pull themselves back into the match.

South soaked this up and Mitch who had now reverted to scrum half managed to again snipe round the back and break for the line to score a lovely little try. Jude on his team debut at prop stepped up and kicked a lovely. Conversion making it 46-7.

The present of the South boys in the Covents side made a big difference with them all scoring from some great breaks and in honesty poor tackling from the South side. They managed to pull the score back to 46-33 !!!

A hasty team talk was in order and in the last two minutes Sout stormed back towards the Covents 22", Mitch who was really being busy fed the ball beautifully to Jack, who outstripped the defence to score near the posts.

51-33. Conversion missed. Final score.

Team, today was challenging for us in many ways, clearly Old Coventians were not strong enough to cope and we have a very large squad which is fantastic but can give the coaches some head scratching moments re giving players an opportunity for match time. These type of matches can be frustrating to play in and to watch. You must keep your discipline and remember to stay focussed as a squad when things don't go to plan ! You scored some fabulous tries today and the players who turned out for Old Covents were a credit to our squad and club - so thank you ! Well done to the players making their debuts, the three 'J's, Joshua, James and Jude and to Issac - well done fellas !! Thank you parents for your continued support , it so vital for the players and it is amazing to see so many of you there every week ! Remember we sell South wooly hats in the shop as it will be a lot colder soon on that touch line !!

Well done to Mitch Bailey - man of the match, two tries and a great performance.

Thank you Gary summers for sponsoring todays man of the match !
