Tough going at Ashby !

Match report

Ashby v South Leicester 27/9/15

It was a beautiful sunny day for our first match of the season against Ashby RFC.

We had some positional changes with Myles making his debut in the centre and Roniie and Luke making their debuts for a full match.

Ashby had the brightest start scoring within three minutes with a well worked try down the right wing scoring under the post. They kicked an easy conversion making the score 7-0.

South rallied and started to attack down the centre putting pressure on Ashby who defended strongly causing South to make a number of errors. Ashby took advantage of these and scored again on the right - score 12-0 conversion missed. Morgan sustained an injury and was replaced by Ollie on the back row.

South were finding life difficult against a well organised Ashby team who spun the ball left and managed to sneek another well worked try making the score 17-0. Conversion missed.

From the restart South gained possession and Jack made a strong run down the centre, giving a great off load to George at No8 who was storming around the pitch. The Ashby defence however was solid and they were proving hard to break.

South continued to apply pressure but the half ended 17-0 to the home side.

The second half started brightly with South attacking Ashby down the middle, Jack made a big tackle which turned meant turnover ball and the back showed some good hands feeding Alex on the right wing who made a brilliant jinxing run to the line, scoring a much needed and excellent try near to the posts ! Callum made a valiant attempt at the conversion which just went wide. 17-5 to Ashby.

South started show much better defence and were competing for more and more ball against a big Ashby pack. Reece was sniping around the breakdown and making a real nuisance of himself , George was making some scything runs from the scrum and really leading the way for the pack to follow, however a lack of concentration and some wayward hands allowed Ashby to regain the edge with another score in the bottom corner. They were successful with the conversion making the final score 24-5 !

Lads, despite being defeated you all showed glimpses of what you can do. It was our first game and we were rusty and lacked some aggression and determination, however you all have the skills, ability and focus to start a winning run. You must dig deep when it counts and put faith in your abilities and the coaches. You are a great team and we are VERY PROUD of everyone of you ! Keep working hard in training, help each other as a team and we will be very hard to beat !! COME ON THE SOUTH !!!

Admin note -

Team there was some fines issued today - these are not excessive 50p for forgetting or not having the right kit etc, ie gumshields, shorts, boots. All the funds will go into the kitty for tour and other team expenses throughout the year, so ultimately you will all benefit. This is to help build discipline, ensure we all look the same when we turn out and give you some responsibility towards your team - clearly I want it to be fun and not a chore ! As always Thank you for all your efforts and hard work it's what a makes a good team, a great team !!
