South were in this game until the hour mark when champions elect Ampthill took control to run out convincing winners.
The last home game of the season was played in fine sunny conditions, a direct contrast to last weeks sodden abject misery at Luctonians.
Ben Antill made a return to action after injury, while Len Fincham and Mark Bayley returned to the front row. James Harrison and Ben Voce retained their places in the back line.
Ampthill have been sweeping all before them throughout the season and they opened the game at pace scoring two tries, one converted in the first 10 minutes. South gradually settled down and scored a try of their own through Len Fincham who was forced over by his team mates at the culmination of a dynamic rolling maul. Mark Lord converted.
South showed considerable fortitude, under pressure, to restrict Ampthill’s attacking ambitions with some fine destructive tackling with Tom Armstrong, Mike March and Chris Mark to the fore. Lord traded two penalties with his opposite number to take the half time score to 13-18 and game on.
Ampthill immediately hit back with a converted try to increase their lead to 13-25, but another period of South stablisation kept the maroon tide at bay. On the hour, however, Ampthill’s superior fitness and physical approach wore South down and four converted tries were conceded as the league leaders crushed any lasting resistance from the green and whites.
Ampthill showed why they are probably the most complete side in this league having won the championship so convincingly this season. We wish them well in promotion to N2 N or S as they are probably better equipped than Broad St were last season to make the quantum leap.
