Last week it was “the game of two halves”, this week it was “ a game too far” for South. Since before the Sutton game South have been operating with a limited team due to injuries and more crucially unavailability of players.
Those that played against Ampthill put their heart and soul into the game, but in my opinion, were let down badly by those who chose not to be there. It may have been the last game of the season, with nothing to play for after the consolidation of third place, but club pride and reputation was at stake.
South were much changed in personnel again and frankly were no match for Ampthill who had to gain something from the game to hold off Sutton Coldfield for the title. Hinckley did the champions a favour by coming back from trailing 6-20 to draw with Sutton 20 points apiece.
With a full side out I am sure South would have challenged Ampthill up front and consequently limited the supply of ball that was capitalised on by their swift and clinical back division. It wasn’t to be!
Mark Lord scored South’s only try after throwing a big dummy and running through the Ampthill defence to dot down. He converted the try himself.
As the game broke up Ampthill capitalised on every South mistake to run in a hatful of tries and inflict, probably, South’s biggest reverse in all their seasons in N3M.
