Wharfedale is a tough place to travel for any team, 140 miles and 4 hours on a bus. So any points was a bonus for South

It’s a measure of how South have improved when 2 bonus points is looked on as a disappointment

Travelling to Wharfedale has to be one of the more difficult places to visit in National 2 north, the location is remote, the supporters are partisan and that’s putting it lightly, the program editor’s comments about South were not the slightest bit funny and to top it off, they are not a bad side either.

Many thanks go to David and Howard, Chairman and Secretary whose hospitality to the south executive was superb.

On the pitch the game started badly for south, straight from the kick off, Wharfedale gathered the ball and went under the post for a converted try, barely a minute had passed and certainly not a tackle made 7-0. South got into the game with a Rickie Aley penalty 7-3 and then a good pair of hands between Wes Cope and Gaz Clarke gave south the lead 7-8 on the 10 minute mark. The next 20 minutes was all Whardedale, with another 3 trys 28-8. It looked bleak for South as the home team were dominating all areas apart
from the scrum. This pressure was turned into a score for Gaz Turner on the back of good hands, followed by a penalty try, off the hard work from the forwards, Aley converting both. HT score 28-22. From nowhere South were still in the game.

South started the second half better with a Rickie Aley penalty 28-25, the home crowd were not in the slightest bit impressed, however Wharfedale hit back with another try. 33-25. Both teams were feeling the pace and substitutions were in full flow. Half way through the second half, souths pack again came to the fore, resulting in another converted penalty try 33-32. The game was there for the taking; however the home team just had the edge to go over in the corner for the final score of the match. FT 38-32

For the 6 south fans that travelled out of the 450 strong crowd, and the south playing squad, it was a hell of an experience. South look forward to hosting Wharfedale, when they visit Welford road in the new year, in front of the home faithful.
