Outscoring Caldy 2 tries to one was not enough to overcome the dogged visitors who dug in when under pressure and eventually came out on top thanks to a surfeit of penalties. Early on both sides were attempting to put together some coherent play but two well matched teams cancelled each other out.
Aleys chip through almost put Gunn in as South began to have more of the territorial advantage but is was not until the 20th minute that they managed to make that pay when Aley converted a penalty.
Defences were on top and it looked like a stalemate until a penalty in front of their post was slotted over by Caldy centre, Roberts
South began to exert pressure which forced Caldy to concede an obvious penalty, Aley converting. Just before HT a missed tackle let Caldy scrum half Jones in who found Roberts for a try converted by Jones. HT 6-13
Following a line out near South's line Caldy were awarded another penalty, Centre Roberts slotting over.
The home teams pack were beginning to exert pressure in the scrums as the front row of McNaughton, Ager and Peck, who replaced the injured Ed Hopkins early on, made life difficult for Caldy. The pressure paid off as Chris Bale made one his charges up-field allowing Heath to find Gunn who crossed for a try, Aley adding the points to make 13-16.
Inevitably Caldy were awarded 2 more penalties taken by the points machine Roberts and South now had an uphill task.
Credit to the home side, they took it to the opposition as they camped on Caldys line and won a series of penalties which they opted to scrum and amazingly no penalty try was awarded, the away team got away with it. To rub salt in the wound they went down field and got another penalty which Roberts took, game over with one losing bonus point as consolation.
