Ampthill defeated South Leicester 24-7 away at Welford Road on Thursday evening as part of their preparation for a second season in National One, the third tier of English rugby.
South Leicester's try came from a break from their own five-metre line; Ampthill knocked on and failed to play to the whistle, as the 'South' backs scooped up the ball and ran the length of the pitch to open the scoring, 7-0 with the conversion.
Ampthill enjoyed territory and possession for the remainder of the half and crossed the whitewash twice.
The first came via Vili Ma'asi, on the back of a caught and driven line-out, conversion missed by Mickey Wilson; the second was through Sam Baker which was converted by Wilson to make it 12-7 at half-time.
After the restart, Ampthill touched down twice without reply from their hosts, despite the home side having multiple phases of possession, for prolonged periods of the game.
Baker got his second try of the game midway through the half, not converted, then Ben Calder added another with ten minutes to play, selling his marker a lovely dummy having picked up the ball off the back of an Ampthill ruck five metres out. This one was converted by Joe Daniel to complete the evening's scoring, 24-7 to the visiting A's
