South slip up at Syston
South failed in their bid to take part in their seventh successive County Cup Final when in a lack lustre display they went down 19-14 to Syston at Barkby Road.
Both teams were without key players and consequently the quality of the rugby wasn’t reflective of their relative displays in the league.
South raced to a 14 – 0 lead in the early exchanges with Stu Bale and Dave Weston touching down, both converted by Weston. Syston added their first converted try just before the interval for a 14-7 scoreline in the visitors favour.
South lost Josh McLaurin and Sam Greasley to yellow cards in the second half and Syston took advantage with two tries, one being converted for the winning margin. The home side seemed to want it more although South pressured until the end, without success.
Syston go forward to meet Hinckley (who beat Market Bosworth 34-22) Loughborough and Lutterworth in the semi finals. Both teams are back in league action next week with South hosting Mansfield, while Syston take on league leaders Sutton Coldfield at Barkby Road.
